Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is an infection of one or more nails. While it is typically caused by dermatophyte, yeasts, molds and other fungi can also cause onychomycosis. Whatever fungal organisms are to blame for it, toenail fungus can be uncomfortable, unattractive, and even odorous. Elderly people are more susceptible to onychomycosis because of their weaker immune systems, poorer circulation, and brittle nails—which can crack and allow easier access to harmful fungi. If you notice one or more of your nails has become thickened, distorted, discolored with yellow or white streaks or spots, or has darkened, you may have toenail fungus. Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.
